Day 206, Friday, September 25

I thought this looked interesting.... The big leaf is about 2 feet long.

There was a very lively reaction to yesterdays Sandpiper daily post.... everything from "wishing I was at the beach" to "a common difficulty identifying shorebirds".

Comments came from New Zealand, Canada, Austria as well and the States. Thank you all........

Thanks to fellow Smugmuger "banjon" for pointing out that yesterdays daily.., which I called a Western Sandpiper, is actually a Semipalmated Sandpiper with its shorter and thicker bill..... and for directing me to fellow Muggers Pat and Melanie at pj-mcblake.smugmug.com

Also to "fotomom" for suggesting whatbird.com to help in identification.

And "inanga" for national geographic.com/animals/birds

And anyone I missed.... thanks again.

Day 279, Monday, December 7

Sometimes we get in an acceptable rut.....

I am a stubborn person. I think I can learn everything on my own. When I reach my limits, I tend to get bored for lack of excitement...because no new horizons are opening for me. Yes..... I will consider a camera club, educational course or some such activity.
Our community is wonderful. Sharing our days and thoughts...but I wish, sometimes, we would share technical advise. The Smugmug community "honest feedback", doesn't make the grade.

I recently received an email offering me some advice. I explored this advice and offer these two photos. The one on the right is a PP photo that I would have considered acceptable. Processed in Jpeg with my iPhoto Program. The photo on the left is PP in RAW with my old, no longer used Canon Program. I like the left one better. With this rediscovered direction, I hope to improve and offer better photos than I have in the past.

A big heartfelt Thank You to Gary Esman for taking the time to help me improve my photography.

normvz > "John Deere"
Day 185, Friday, September 4

How does that song go.......?

My wife took my keys
so I couldn't go to town......
but she forgot about my old John Deere.

Dipping into the archives this morning. Some of you may have seen this before.... in my alternative gallery titled "Homestead". Notice the John Deere name on the front of the tractor. Still a bit of John Deere Green left on the engine block. I thought the Wagon was equally interesting, but none of the captures were very good. Poor composition. I had to go through the barbed wire fence to get my shots.

My PSE6 for Macs should arrive today or tomorrow. All I've ever had for processing was my Canon Program and then iPhoto after I bought my Mac. I'm looking forward to trying some new PPing techniques. It should be fun.

normvz > "The Pinetree Pasture Resort"
Day 180, Sunday, August 30

If horses could ever go to a "resort pasture".... this would be it. Plenty of grass, shade, a breeze, beauty and birds singing.

There were 3 horses in this pasture. They must think they have it made. They were to the right of this capture.....but too far way.

I ordered PhotoShop Elements 6 for Mac yesterday. $44. on Amazon. I need all the help I can get.

I also went to the Wetlands yesterday and tomorrow I will post an unusual, cool and fun photo.

Day 242, Saturday, October 31

No... not a monster... Just a soft shell turtle buried in the mud and raising his snoot to the surface so he can breathe.

Tomorrow I have a photo titled..... "Fall in Florida".
I think you'll like it......

normvz > "I kissed a gator....I kissed a gator "
Day 181, Monday, August 31

This might be the turtle version of a squirrel running in front of a car.....

When I saw this 3 foot gator and soft shell turtle on a collision course...I didn't know what to expect. They were closing in on each other pretty fast and I didn't have time to check any camera settings. I hoped they were adequate. I just kept watching through the viewfinder.

The turtle was the aggressor. He.... or she did all the approaching. It MUST see that gator I thought as it made a beeline toward the gator... like it couldn't get there fast enough..... I was prepared for some action. Do gators eat turtles? I think so... Do turtles kick gator butt? I didn't know but I wouldn't have long to wait.

I was tense...I waited.
Turns out....they were buddies. Now, if gators and turtles can get along ....why can't we?

I guess hanging from that tree branch for an hour was worth the wait................. just kidding.

normvz > "Feather on Wood"
Day 210, Tuesday, September 29

I've been trying to capture a feather "floating on water" for a couple of weeks. The other morning I found a couple but thought the results of this feather lying on the Wetlands boardwalk was the better ....... The shadow was cast by a nearby handrail.

After I took my photos.... I watched as other photographers never noticed and just walked over the feather.

To each his own.

Day 196, Tuesday, September 15

I took this a few days ago. I don't think it stands on it's own....so.. I was going to use PSE6 and layer this onto a background of the full moon which I took last week. Problem is....I haven't figured layers out yet.....and I need a daily post....so this is all there is....one layer.

The sun was setting on the horizon to my right. As I was heading for the car, this Osprey made his catch and rose directly in front of me. I only had a second to get off a burst as he flew directly over my head.

normvz > Day 80, May 22 ... "Anhinga"

This is the third day of heavy rain in Florida. Not a hurricane but an upper level low. Some places have had well over a foot. Florida was considered in a drought, but this will take care of that.... Some places went from a deficit of 8 inches to a plus 6 for the year. And it's still raining. This will help fill Lake Okeechobee, an important source of water in south Florida.

Because of the weather, todays daily is from the archives. This is an Anhinga... similar to a Cormorant but with a more slender neck and bill. Wintering and spending the summer only in the south eastern & southern states. Like the mostly all black Cormorant, which is wide spread across the US, you would see him swimming underwater, spearing fish and then spreading his wings to dry. I found this guy drying, just as the sun was setting over both our shoulders.
